『闲闲书话』孔子论读书的境界 你知道是什么意思吗

孔子曰：“古之学者为己，今之学者为人。”
如果有兴趣，大家来发表一下自己对孔子这句话的理解；如果还有兴趣，怎么翻译成英语？

古代，学习是为了自己的修身养性；
现在，学习是为了给别人看。
以上理解不知道对否？不过却使我想起了 Francis Bacon的 Of Study来：一叹。

同意aphd，不过他这句话描述的春秋时期的社会，可见自古学习皆是为己。而人们总是把道德崇高的愿望寄托在古代。
象柏杨就批评过孔子将尧舜禹写的过于崇高，完全歪曲了真实的历史。

in ancient time one study for himself , while nowadays one study for others . BUT i think another interpretation can go, too. that is:
ancient scholar's study was for me, while my study is for others. here the "others" means people in the future.
according to the first interpretation, we can suppose that the master felt sad when he found the comptemporary scholars were going after something else other than to make themselves perfect. they persue fame, status, and power, and money, through acdemic work.
i tend to accept the second interpretation. here the master emphasised the heridity of study, the historic deposition of knowledge and wisdom. so he adviced the scholars or his followers to learn, to study what ancients had presented, and to learn in the present world with not too much enthusiasm to be materially or scociologically rewarded.

我比较趋向第二种解释,这是XX学习的重点,是智慧和知识的结晶.所以他建议学者和他的追随们学习,学习那些古人介绍的,不要对当今世界的本质上或精神上的报酬太狂热.

我学习孔子不多，甚至并不知道这句话的出处，所以如果解释太离谱的话，也希望得到大家的帮助而不是耻笑。谢谢！

这里把我的意思用中文写写吧：
“古人学习是为了自己，而现在的人学习是为了他人（如果抄袭aphd,就是：现在学习是为了给别人看）。”但我认为另外的一种解释可能也是对的：“古贤学习的成果最终为我所用，而我的修习同样又会为他人所用（这里的他人指的是后来人）。”
按照第一种解释，我们可以想象孔子发现他那个时代的人读书并非是为了追求修善自身，而更多的是企图通过读书来追逐功名利禄（这样一些身外的东西），因此他老人家感到悲哀而发此一叹。
我比较倾向于接受第二种翻译和理解。孔子在这里强调学习的继承性，强调知识与智慧的历史沉淀过程。 所以他建议学者们以及他的弟子们能够好好学习以将前人的学识建树承继下来，同时在自己的学习中不要有太多的功利心，不要太热衷于眼前利益（而要从长远来看，为后人留下一些有价值的东西）。
